 HATTINGLEY VALLEY, Classic Cuvée. Hampshire

Alcohol Percentage: 11.5%

Area: From their website:

Hattingley Valley Vineyard, between Medstead and Wield, was planted in the spring of 2008 by specialist planter Ernst Weis from Germany using the very latest laser-guided planting technology (which even managed to cope with a bomb crater left by Ernst’s countrymen over 60 years ago!) Situated on chalky bedrock similar to the terroir in the Champagne region, this 7.3 hectare south-facing site supports 22,000 vines of the three principal champagne varieties. Most recently in May 2011, another 10,500 vines were planted.

Grape Variety: 71% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir, 9% Pinot Meunier. 25% of the blend had a first fermentation in old Burgundy barrels

Old Bridge Rating: The oak fermentation gives extra richness and softness. This is the most impressive young vintage of English fizz that we have tasted

Press Reviews: “This is the inaugural release of Hattingley Valley and it is sensational. The aroma, texture and finesse on the finish are all incredible and you should raise a glass this Christmas for such an amazing achievement”. Matthew Jukes

Hattingley Valley proves once and for all that the Champenois have a lot to worry about from winemakers this side of the channel. English sparkling wine has been on a steep upwards curve for years and it is now widely accepted to rival the best of Champagne. With the climate getting steadily warmer, England is better able to grow the classic Champagne grapes and because it’s still slightly cooler than Champagne, you could argue our wines have even more finesse!

This is the very first vintage of Hattingley Valley Classic Cuvée from vineyards near Alresford in Hampshire. Made by Emma Rice, a former winemaker of Nyetimber in Sussex and Cuvaison in Napa Valley, you know you’re in safe hands. We are delighted to be first to launch this elegant English bubbly, which so far has only been tasted by a very select few. You can be one of the first to try it when you order this month and toast the rise of English fizz.

"Pale gold with aromas of red berries and brioche. The palate is fruity, broad and round and is balanced by brisk acidity and fine mousse. It has a lovely delicate toasty character from the ageing on lees whilst the gentle oak flavour adds an extra layer of complexity. The developing aromas make it superb to drink now but it also has all the components that will allow age.” - Emma Rice, winemaker.
